The big news for June is this: We’ve officially inaugurated the world’s first megawatt-scale AEM electrolyser – the AEM Multicore! And although most of this month’s newsletter is dedicated to the Multicore Day in Saerbeck, we’ve also got a selection of exciting use cases and some illuminating hydrogen research to share below.

AEM Multicore Day 

Around 100 guests and 40 Enapter colleagues from across Europe descended on the climate community of Saerbeck on May 24 for the official inauguration of the AEM Multicore. Held just down the road from the Enapter Campus at the Bioenergiepark Saerbeck, the German-language event kicked off with a stimulating set of keynotes. Mona Neubaur, Deputy Premier and Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia led the way: 
 

“Green hydrogen is a key element for the energy transition. Innovative solutions and fast action are needed to implement the energy transition quickly. With the Enapter Campus, its unique energy concept and the innovative AEM technology, Enapter is setting a good example. This lighthouse project of hydrogen production in our region supports North Rhine-Westphalia on its way towards becoming a climate-neutral industrial location and technology leader for the global energy transition.” 

 
After our team together with Dr. Lehberg and Dr. Sommer cut the ribbon, guests had the opportunity to go inside the AEM Multicore, see the first demo string of 10 stack modules, or join a bike tour through the Bioenergiepark. Following lunch, guests had the option to join a guided tour through the Enapter Campus, to visit the workshop where our team is assembling and testing Multicore stack modules, the chemical lab and the production area to get an idea of our current activities and what’s going to happen here soon.

AEM use cases from Italy to the UK

Enapter’s quick-to-deploy AEM electrolysers are already unlocking energy transition solutions all around the world – and this month we take a look at two examples using our using our compact EL-series electrolysers. 

Some of you may already be aware of hydrogen aviation pioneer Zeroavia – but perhaps you’re not so familiar with how a mobile refuelling solution for H2 planes works. Enter EMEC who deployed an innovative refuelling system for Zeroavia in the HyFlyer project in the UK. In the last year it was expanded to draw on ten of our EL 2.1 compact AEM electrolysers; check out a brand new video about the system here.  

Our wonderful team members in Pisa aren’t the only Italian H2 innovators: Our Italy-based partner Loccioni is an engineering specialist with decades of experience in transportation, energy, manufacturing and health. They teamed up with another pioneer – Europe’s oldest energy company, Edison from Milan – to create a system used to produce green hydrogen for R&D purposes. Take a closer look here

H2 dezentral – joint research study

A freshly published study from the German Energy Agency (dena) has found that decentralised green hydrogen concepts are an important building block for climate neutrality and security of energy supply. 
 
The new study contains, among other insights:   

  • How well Enapter’s AEM electrolysis compares to other green hydrogen technologies  
  • Which decentralised business models for green H2 can help drive the energy transition locally
