Colombia power-to-gas system with reactor/burner

La Guajira, Colombia

Researchers of the Universidad de Antioquia and the University of La Guajira created a joint project with the goal to develop and evaluate a power-to-gas (PtG) system using renewable energy surpluses – and produce both green hydrogen and methane gas. The first power-to-gas project in Colombia is powered by 15kW of local wind and solar power, which feeds Enapter’s AEM Electrolysers to produce onsite green hydrogen. Once produced, the hydrogen can then be stored at the electrolysers’ outlet pressure of around 30 bar. The system is controlled by Enapter’s Energy Management System (EMS) Toolkit.  Planned and commissioned by our local integration partner TRA Busso, this project presented the challenge of designing and constructing a methanation reactor and a burner for 100% hydrogen combustion. The researchers’ methanation reactor achieved a CO2 conversion rate of up to 92%, while the hydrogen burner successfully operated using hydrogen as fuel without any flame stability issues. This paves the way to scale up the solution in Colombia and beyond.
