The 2024 Enapter Holiday Reading List
Back in green for your holiday reading
December 18, 2024
Enapter’s Holiday Reading List is back by popular demand, one last time. And what a time it’s been for green hydrogen in 2024. Let’s go.
Tumultuous times in Europe:
Europe has experienced some big ups and downs in 2024. Let’s start with the positive:
European Commission’s €4.6bn housewarming. As the EC kicked off its new mandate, it put up €3.4bn for decarbonisation tech – and €1.2 billion for the 2nd European Hydrogen Bank auction.
A year of volatility for Europe. It’s a hard ask to try to capture all of the ups and downs of European green hydrogen in 2024 but this edition of Hydrogen Compass does well.
Germany cancels €350 H2 funding. Even as three other countries try on Europe’s green hydrogen Auction-as-a-Service initiative, Germany has cancelled its €350 million auction.
First green H2 imports from Egypt. In Germany’s first auction for importing green hydrogen products, it awarded a contract for supply of green ammonia from Egypt.
Germany should focus on domestic H2? However, researchers say Germany should focus on local green H2 production due to uncertainties on the how much H2 will be available to import.
Around the world:
From the US elephant in the room to emerging powerhouses, H2 is also in flux globally.
Trump return causes uncertainty. The truth is that no-one knows what a second Trump presidency will mean for green hydrogen; this article examines some of the possible outcome.
Enapter & Clean H2 hit the US. Enapter remains bullish on the US where Solar Invest, the exclusive US partner and authorized distributor of Enapter products for the market established Clean H2 to build a sales and service network. First sales are already reported!
China dominates green H2 projects, equipment. China accounted for 40% of all low-emission H2 production projects and 60% of electrolyser manufacturing capacity in the last year.
Enapter Wolong Joint Venture in AEM. Taking advantage of this growth, Enapter and Wolong Group’s JV began series production of 1 MW AEM Nexus electrolysers for the Chinese market.
Closer to home with Enapter:
As a few of the articles above hint, it’s also been a big year for Enapter. Here’s more news:
Enapter achieves first positive EBITDA. On top of this balanced EBITDA for the first time in 2023, our turnover increased by 114% to € 31.5 million last year.
First ESRS standards ESG report. Another pioneering step for our team – we published our first ESG report following the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).
Massive MW-scale Italy sales. Enapter in 2024 received not only its biggest single European order from Italy – 4 MW from Renco SpA – but also a total volume of 11.5 MW in Italian orders.
Tech focus:
Looking more closely at the technical side of green hydrogen generation:
The optimum PV to electrolyser ratio. Researchers have found an optimum PV-to-electrolyser ratio for Italy as well as evidence that H2 storage has more supply-side flexibility than batteries.
EMS Toolkit 3.0 in testing: Enapter is beta testing version 3.0 of its Energy Management System Toolkit, a local-first platform for energy management. Read more and get early access here.
AEM’s iridium-free advantage. Iridium, an extremely rare and expensive metal is a potential bottleneck for PEM electrolysers but not needed for AEM. Read more in English and German.
Big reads – where to next?
Something for those with a bit more time on their hands these holidays:
The IEA Global Hydrogen Review. The 2024 edition of the Global Hydrogen Review looks back at the year 2023 but makes up for the time lag with in-depth analysis of green hydrogen globally.
A roadmap for quality infrastructure. Quality infrastructure doesn’t often get the spotlight but this report from IRENA lays out a roadmap for building a QI ecosystem for green hydrogen.
The new oil. Finally, we have recommendation from Enapter Co-Founder Sebastian-Justus Schmidt for a longer read from Thierry Lepercq – Hydrogen is the New Oil.
