See allWorld’s first grid-supportive solar hydrogen home
Berlin, Germany
The “FlexEhome” from our partner HPS Home Power Solutions is the world’s first grid-supportive solar hydrogen home – providing both thermal and electrical energy self-sufficiency – and contributing to the grid. Within FlexEhome the intelligent temporal use of energy storage systems aims to achieve highly flexible and thus grid-serving operation, at every second of the year.
In a bid to overcome the challenge of seasonal imbalances and wasted prosumer electricity, this pilot house system funded by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action only feeds or withdraws electricity into and from the electricity grid when it serves the grid.
At its core is picea, a long-term energy storage system from HPS Home Power Solutions. It converts excess summer solar power into green hydrogen drawing on Enapter’s AEM electrolysis technology, providing electricity and waste heat during winter.
And instead of reducing the maximum feed-in power of the house’s individual PV systems to avoid grid bottlenecks – and thus causing renewable electricity to be unused and lost due to a lack of electricity grid flexibility – the picea can turn excess electricity at times of peak supply into green hydrogen, allowing grid-serving operation at any time of the year
